Modernisation works on the A4 motorway, section Katowice-Krakow - update
We would like to inform you that we are currently completing the final stage of modernisation works (resurfacing) on the A4 Katowice–Kraków motorway. From 23 October 2026, works will be carried out only at the Balice motorway junction, with no significant impact on the motorway’s capacity. In addition, short-term finishing works of a local nature will be carried out.
ROAD SURFACE REPLACEMENT
On the section between the Rudno junction and the Balice Toll Plaza, a revised traffic management scheme is currently in place in the direction of Katowice only:
- from km 396.3 to 400.1, two narrowed lanes are available on the carriageway heading towards Katowice, whilst traffic heading towards Kraków flows normally on the new road surface. During the night, whilst the concrete barriers are being removed, the carriageway towards Katowice is reduced to a single lane. Normal traffic towards Katowice is scheduled to resume on 16 October 2026.
On the section between the Mysłowice motorway service area and the Byczyna junction, on the carriageway heading towards Kraków: finishing works are underway and the amended traffic arrangements remain in place:
- from km 358.1 to km 362.3, one lane is open on the carriageway heading towards Kraków (works are underway in the other lane),
- on the carriageway towards Katowice, two lanes are available for traffic heading towards Katowice and one lane for traffic heading towards Kraków (the two directions are separated by a special barrier).
PLEASE NOTE!
The exit to the Kępnica Motorway Service Area is only accessible from the right-hand lane of the carriageway heading towards Kraków.
Access to the motorway at the Jeleń junction and from the Zastawie and Aleksandrowice service areas is possible only after stopping at the ‘STOP’ sign.
Work on this section of both carriageways is scheduled to be completed on 23 October 2026.
At the Balice Toll Plaza, from 16 October until the end of November 2026, road resurfacing works will be carried out; as a result, toll lanes in both directions will be closed in stages.
REPAIR OF THE BRIDGE STRUCTURE in Balice, km 400.8
Until 19 October 2026, repairs will be carried out on the reinforced concrete elements of the bridge structure in Balice. Traffic disruption:
- the outermost left-hand lanes on both carriageways of the motorway will be closed – traffic heading towards Kraków will use the right-hand main lane and the lane for turning right towards the Kraków southern bypass; on the left-hand carriageway, traffic will use the right-hand lane from the direction of the Kraków northern bypass and the two existing lanes from the direction of the Kraków southern bypass,
- during night-time hours, there may be additional closures of the left-hand lanes – traffic heading towards Kraków will use the right-hand side of the carriageway, whilst traffic heading towards Katowice will use a single lane from both the southern and northern Kraków ring roads.

Proper maintenance of the A4 Katowice–Kraków motorway infrastructure, including the road surface and engineering structures (such as bridges and viaducts), is required not only by current regulations but also by the provisions of the Concession Agreement, which obliges the concessionaire to hand over the motorway to the public sector in 2027 in excellent technical condition, i.e. in a state that will not require repairs or modernisation in the years to come.
We apologise for any disruption to traffic and ask that you pay particular attention to road signs.
