Modernisation works on the A4 motorway, section Katowice-Krakow - update
We would like to inform you that the final stage of modernisation works (resurfacing of the carriageway) is currently underway on the A4 Katowice–Kraków motorway. The works will be carried out with minimal impact on traffic flow, with two lanes open in both directions.
On 11 and 12 May this year, between 18:00 and 21:00, from km 362 to km 364, i.e. near the Kępnica service area, a progressive narrowing to a single lane is planned on the carriageway heading towards Kraków. This change to traffic management is related to the reconstruction of the motorway’s drainage system.
ROAD SURFACE REPLACEMENT
1) On 14 May 2026, repair works will commence within the Byczyna motorway junction in Jaworzno (the junction on national road DK79 over the A4 motorway). For the duration of the road resurfacing works, traffic management changes will be introduced along DK79 and on the slip roads of the aforementioned junction.
The temporary traffic management plan involves several stages of works, with works on the DK79 being carried out in half-width sections, narrowing the carriageway to a single lane (manually controlled alternating traffic), whilst the junction slip roads will be completely closed to traffic during night-time works.
Works related to the resurfacing of the DK79 carriageway will be carried out from 14 to 26 May 2026 between 18:00 and 06:00 the following day.
Work on the renovation and closure of the Byczyna junction slip roads will take place from 14 to 26 May 2026 (excluding Saturdays and Sundays) between 23:00 and 05:00 the following day, with the following arrangements:
- the Jaworzno/Chrzanów–Kraków link road will be completely closed to traffic at night from 14 to 20 May, with a diversion in place. The diversion for the closed junction slip road will be established by redirecting vehicles from the DK79 towards Chrzanów to the roundabout at the junction of Śląska, Skorupki and Oświęcimska streets, and then along Skorupki and Balińska streets to the Balin junction,
- the Kraków–Jaworzno link road will be completely closed to traffic at night from 21 to 26 May, with a diversion in place. The diversion for the closed junction link between Kraków and Jaworzno will be established by redirecting vehicles at the Balin junction from the motorway onto Balińska Street and then along Jana Skorupki Street in Chrzanów to the roundabout at the junction of Śląska, Skorupki and Oświęcimska Streets. Then along Śląska Street, which forms part of the DK79 towards Jaworzno.
During the day, between 05:00 and 23:00, the above slip roads will be open to traffic.
The dates for the introduction of the revised traffic arrangements are subject to change due to weather conditions and the possibility of implementing temporary traffic arrangements.
Completion of works within the Byczyna junction is scheduled for the end of May 2026.2) In the direction of Kraków, between the Byczyna junction and the Rudno junction, traffic arrangements have been altered on two sections:
from km 368 to km 373 and from km 376 to km 380.
- on the carriageway towards Kraków, one lane is open,
- on the carriageway towards Katowice, two lanes are available for traffic heading towards Katowice and one lane for traffic heading towards Kraków (both directions will be separated by a special barrier).
PLEASE NOTE: Access to the motorway at the Balin and Chrzanów junctions is possible only after stopping at the ‘STOP’ sign.
Completion of works on these sections on both carriageways is scheduled for the end of May 2026.

Proper maintenance of the A4 Katowice-Kraków motorway infrastructure, including the road surface and engineering structures (such as bridges and viaducts), stems not only from applicable regulations but also from the provisions of the Concession Agreement, which obliges the concessionaire to hand over the motorway to the public sector in 2027 in excellent technical condition, i.e. one that will not require repairs or modernisation in the coming years.
We apologise for any disruption to traffic and ask you to pay particular attention to road signs.
