Modernisation works on the A4 motorway, section Katowice-Krakow - update

3 09 2026 #New #Warning

Traffic management from 3 September this year.

We would like to inform you that the final stage of modernisation works (resurfacing of the carriageway) is currently underway on the A4 Katowice–Kraków motorway. The works will be carried out with minimal impact on the route’s capacity, with two lanes open in both directions.

ROAD SURFACE REPLACEMENT

On two sections heading towards Kraków: between the Mysłowice toll station and the Byczyna junction, and between the Rudno junction and the Balice toll station, the following traffic arrangements apply:

from km 358.1 to km 362.3 and from km 396.3 to 400.1

  • on the carriageway towards Kraków, one lane is open (work is underway in the other lane),
  • on the carriageway towards Katowice, there are two lanes available for those travelling towards Katowice and one lane for those travelling towards Kraków (the two directions are separated by a special barrier).

PLEASE NOTE!

The exit to the Kępnica and Morawica motorway service areas is only possible from the right-hand lane on the carriageway heading towards Kraków.

Access to the motorway at the Jeleń junction and from the Zastawie, Aleksandrowice and Morawica motorway service areas is only possible after stopping at the ‘STOP’ sign.

Work on these sections of both carriageways is scheduled to be completed by the end of October 2026.

REPAIR OF THE BRIDGE STRUCTURE in Balice, km 400.8

In September this year, repairs are carried out on the reinforced concrete elements of the bridge structure in Balice. Traffic disruption:

  • the left-hand lanes on both carriageways of the motorway are closed – traffic heading towards Kraków is using the right-hand main lane and the lane for turning right towards the Kraków southern ring road;
  • on the left-hand carriageway, traffic is using the right-hand lane from the direction of the Kraków northern ring road and the two existing lanes from the direction of the Kraków southern ring road;

During night-time hours, there may be additional closures of the left-hand lanes – traffic heading towards Kraków will use the right-hand side of the carriageway, whilst traffic heading towards Katowice will use a single lane from both the southern and northern Kraków ring roads.

BRIDGE REPAIRS at km 392.3 (between the Rudno junction and the Balice toll plaza)

In September this year, repairs to the reinforced concrete elements of the bridge.

Traffic disruption:

  • the emergency lanes and, in part, the right-hand lanes on both carriageways of the motorway will be occupied – traffic will be restricted to two narrowed lanes,
  • during night-time hours, there may be additional periodic restrictions to a single lane.

BRIDGE REPAIRS at km 379.2 (between the Rudna junction and the Balice toll plaza)

In September this year, repairs to the reinforced concrete elements of the bridge structure.

Traffic disruption:

  • the central reservation and the left-hand lane on the carriageway towards Kraków will be closed – traffic will be restricted to two narrowed lanes,
  • during night-time hours, there may be additional temporary restrictions to a single lane.

Detailed information on traffic management is available at https://www.a4info.pl/

Proper maintenance of the A4 Katowice–Kraków motorway infrastructure, including the road surface and engineering structures (such as bridges and viaducts), stems not only from the applicable regulations but also from the provisions of the Concession Agreement, which obliges the concessionaire to hand over the motorway to the public sector in 2027 in excellent technical condition, i.e. in a state that will not require repairs or modernisation in the years to come.

We apologise for any disruption to traffic and ask that you pay particular attention to road signs.
