A4 KATOWICE-KRAKÓW – RESURFACING TO START AFTER MAY DAY HOLIDAY

20 04 2016 #Press information

Division of the investment into stages, works carried out over short sections, two lanes of traffic retained in each direction – the overhaul of the concession stretch of the A4 is going to be driver-friendly. During the World Youth Days in Krakow the works will be ceased and the traffic will proceed as usual.

Road resurfacing will start on the A4 Katowice-Krakow on 4 May. First the works will be carried out on the westbound carriageway (Katowice direction), on a four kilometre stretch between the Balice Toll Plaza and the Rudno Junction (from 386 km to 390 km).

– We have planned the works in such a way as to make them the least problematic for users of our motorway. Each of the twelve overhauled stretches of the road will be quite short, and in the whole period of overhaul two lanes in each direction will be retained. The exception will be short (about two-day) periods for the assembly or disassembly of steel safety barriers dividing the opposing lanes. We tested this system of organisation of works and traffic in 2014 and 2015 and it turned out to be the best solution – says Rafał Czechowski, the spokesperson for Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska.

In order to minimise problems for drivers on the westbound carriageway, one lane will be being resurfaced and the other passable. On the eastbound carriageway (Krakow direction) there will be two lanes in the Krakow direction and one lane in the Katowice direction. Similar traffic organisation is to be introduced when the contractor moves the works to the other carriageway, which is planned for 11 June. On the overhauled stretch a speed limit of 80 km/h will be introduced from 4th May.

The overhaul of both carriageways between the Balice Toll Plaza and the Rudno Junction will finish on 22 July. Works will be ceased for the World Youth Days. The resurfacing on the stretch between Jeleń and Balin junctions will start on 2 August, on the westbound carriageway (Katowice direction). The concessionaire will inform about further stages of the overhaul on the website www.autostrada-a4.pl, twitter (@A4KatKra) and facebook (a4katowicekrakow).

The contractor for the 40.23 million project of resurfacing the A4 Katowice-Krakow is a consortium of companies from Pavimental Group. Works are to finish in November 2017.

About Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska S.A. (SAM S.A.)

Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska S.A. manages the 60-kilometre long stretch of the A4 motorway between Katowice and Krakow. It is the first fully functional road of this kind in Poland, built within the framework of public-private partnership as a brownfield investment – modernisation of the road built in the 1970s and 1980s. Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska S.A. has held the concession for its adaptation to the requirements of a toll motorway and operation since 1997. Meeting the concession obligations has required numerous investments. All investment projects, including current maintenance of the road, are financed from tolls for using the concession stretch and from loans obtained from an international bank consortium. Unlike other concessions for managing toll motorways, the project run by Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska S.A. does not burden the state budget in any way. The company does not receive the so-called availability payments from the State. The company does not benefit from any State Treasury subsidies or guarantees.
