CONVEYOR BELT OVER A4 KATOWICE-KRAKÓW MOTORWAY TO BE DISMANTLED - CHANGE IN THE TRAFFIC ORGANISATION BEETWEN MURCKOWSKA AND MYSŁOWICE JUNCTIONS

6 03 2019 #Press information

The nights between 6-7 March and 7-8 March will see the dismantling of a conveyor belt owned by the former Wieczorek Coal Mine, which runs over A4 Katowice-Kraków motorway at 343 kilometre. Two-way traffic will be directed using one roadway between the Murckowska junction in Katowice and the Mysłowice junction. In addition, the night between 6 and 7 March will see a two-time stoppage of traffic for approx. 20 minutes in that area.

For several days, preparatory works before the demolition of the unused conveyor belt have been carried out between 341 and 343 kilometre of A4 motorway. The degraded structure has been stabilised with three temporary supports that will secure the process of structure cutting and gradual dismantling.

As a result of the dismantling, the following temporary changes in traffic organisation will be introduced:

  • from 10 p.m. on 6 March to approx. 6 a.m. on 7 March, two-way traffic on the section of approx. 2 km will be directed using the roadway towards Kraków only,
  • on the same night, between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m., motorway traffic will be completely stopped twice for approx. 20 minutes during cutting and lifting one part of the conveyor belt,
  • from 10 p.m. on 7 March to approx. 6 a.m. on 8 March, two-way traffic on the section of approx. 2 km will be directed using the roadway towards Katowice only.

Normal traffic organisation, including two lanes in each direction, will be restored at 6 a.m. on 8 March.

"Considering the safety of motorway users and the poor condition of the structure, we have decided to perform conveyor belt dismantling works as soon as possible together with the Mine Restructuring Company S.A. and the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways. Demolition works were planned to be performed at night in order to cause as few traffic issues as possible," explains Rafał Czechowski, Spokesperson of Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska S.A.
"To those who plan to travel our section of the motorway today or tomorrow night – especially those who are going to travel to Kraków or Katowice Airport – please consider the planned traffic problems. We also ask you to drive carefully and pay special attention to temporary motorway road signs," he adds.

The performance of works according to the schedule depends on weather conditions. At the request of the Mine Restructuring Company S.A., Mostostal Zabrze S.A. is the contractor for the works.

Information about SAM SA

Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska S.A. manages the 60-km section of the A4 Katowice-Kraków motorway. This is the first fully operational road of this type in Poland, built as part of the public-private partnership, as a brownfield project  on the basis of the road constructed in the 1970s  and 1980s. Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska S.A. obtained a license for its adaptation to the requirements of the toll motorway and operation in 1997. It required numerous investments. All investment projects and current maintenance of road lanes are funded from revenues obtained from the collection of tolls for the concession section and loans received from the international banking consortium. Unlike other concessions for the management of toll motorways, the project implemented by Stalexport Autostrada S. A. does not burden the State Treasury with any obligations. Moreover, it has not received any grants or guarantees of the Treasury.
