Resurfacing of A4 Katowice-Kraków motorway to commence in August

7 06 2023 #Press information

Starting from mid-Q3 of this year, Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska will be resurfacing the concession section of the A4 motorway. The investment project will be carried out in a reliable and driver-friendly manner, affecting short sections at a time, with two lanes available in each direction. During the resurfacing, the bridges over the motorway will also be refurbished.

The first motorway resurfacing works will begin in late August/early September, between the Kępnica/Zastawie Rest and Service Areas and the Balin junction (between the 362 and 369 km marks). The works will include resurfacing both motorway carriageways, from the Murckowska junction in Katowice to the Balice junction (between the 340 and 401 km marks). The sequence in which the work will be carried out at each section will be agreed upon with the contractor.

"Maintaining the A4 Katowice-Krakow motorway in good order, including the road surface and engineering structures (like bridges), is not only necessitated by the applicable legal regulations but also by the Concession Agreement, which obliges us to make the motorway available to the public by 2027 in flawless technical condition, i.e. such that it will not require repairs and modernisation in the subsequent years", said Rafał Czechowski, spokesman of Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska. "During the previous resurfacing, we introduced traffic organisation that turned out to be optimal from the point of view of traffic flow and which we will also implement this time. Resurfacing will be carried out at short carriageway sections at a time, and two lanes will be available in each direction throughout the process. We assume that this will effectively minimise inconvenience to drivers", he added.

Apart from replacing the surface and restoring its load-bearing capacity at the required sections, the works will also include replacing guard rails in selected areas, repairing drainage systems and restoring horizontal markings.

Replacing the motorway's surface will increase its durability and load-bearing capacity and improve its anti-skid properties, thereby improving motorist safety. Surface drainage will also be improved.

Bridge refurbishment will include repairs to the superstructure, expansion joints, bridge bearings, cornices and pavements, concrete safety barriers and corrosion protection. Not only will this improve the safety and comfort of using the bridges, but also their aesthetics.

Resurfacing and bridge refurbishment works will last until late 2026. The contractor for the works is PAVIMENTAL Polska Sp. z o.o., based in Trzebinia. The contract's net value is over PLN 422 million.

Information about SAM SA

Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska S.A. manages the 60-km section of the A4 Katowice-Kraków motorway. This is the first fully operational road of this type in Poland, built as part of the public-private partnership, as a brownfield project  on the basis of the road constructed in the 1970s  and 1980s. Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska S.A. obtained a license for its adaptation to the requirements of the toll motorway and operation in 1997. It required numerous investments. All investment projects and current maintenance of road lanes are funded from revenues obtained from the collection of tolls for the concession section and loans received from the international banking consortium. Unlike other concessions for the management of toll motorways, the project implemented by Stalexport Autostrada S. A. does not burden the State Treasury with any obligations. Moreover, it has not received any grants or guarantees of the Treasury.
