Modernisation works on the A4 motorway, section Katowice-Krakow - update
We would like to inform you that the final stage of modernisation works (resurfacing of the carriageway) is currently underway on the A4 Katowice–Kraków motorway. The works will be carried out with minimal impact on the route’s capacity, with two lanes open in both directions.
ROAD SURFACE REPLACEMENT
1) towards Katowice, between the Byczyna junction and the Myslowice toll plaza, the following traffic arrangements apply:
from km 358.1 to km 362.3, one lane is open on the carriageway towards Katowice (work is underway on the other lane),
- on the carriageway towards Kraków, two lanes are available for travellers heading towards Kraków and one lane for those heading towards Katowice (both directions will be separated by a special barrier).
PLEASE NOTE: Access to the motorway at the Jeleń junction and the Zastawie service area is only possible after stopping at the ‘STOP’ sign.
Work on this section on both carriageways is scheduled to be completed by the end of August 2026.
2) towards Katowice, between the Balice toll plaza and the Rudno junction, traffic arrangements have been amended:
from km 396.3 to km 400.1, one lane is open on the carriageway towards Katowice (work is underway on the other lane),
- on the carriageway towards Kraków, there are two lanes available for traffic heading towards Kraków and one lane for traffic heading towards Katowice (the two directions will be separated by a special barrier).
PLEASE NOTE: The exit from the motorway to the Aleksandrowice motorway service area from the carriageway heading towards Katowice is only possible from the lane on that carriageway (the main carriageway).
Access to the motorway from the motorway service area is possible after stopping at the ‘STOP’ sign.
Work on this section of the motorway, on both carriageways, is scheduled to be completed by the end of September 2026.
REPAIRS TO THE BRIDGE STRUCTURE in Balice, km 400
Until mid-August this year, repairs will be carried out on the reinforced concrete elements of the bridge in Balice. Traffic disruption:
- the right-hand side of the carriageway in the direction of Katowice will be closed (the right-hand lane and the hard shoulder on the side of the carriageway facing the southern Kraków ring road),
- within the works zone, traffic will be restricted to a single left-hand lane for vehicles approaching from the northern Kraków ring road and two lanes for vehicles approaching from the southern Kraków ring road,
• speed limit reduced to 50 km/h.
Detailed information on traffic management is available at https://www.a4info.pl/
Proper maintenance of the A4 Katowice–Kraków motorway infrastructure, including the road surface and engineering structures (such as bridges and viaducts), stems not only from the applicable regulations but also from the provisions of the Concession Agreement, which obliges the concessionaire to hand over the motorway to the public sector in 2027 in excellent technical condition, i.e. in a state that will not require repairs or modernisation in the years to come.
We apologise for any disruption to traffic and ask you to pay particular attention to road signs.
