STUDENTS WILL CHECK HOW TO DRIVE ECONOMICALLY_A FOLLOW UP ON THE CAMPAIGN "THE JOY OF SAVING" ON SILESIAN AND MALOPOLSKA'S UNIVERSITIES

23 10 2013 #Press information

As part of the campaign "THE JOY OF SAVING" students of Silesian and Malopolska's universities will have the opportunity to check what and to what extent influences fuel consumption during driving. Knowledge gathered in this way will make it possible for them not only to travel economically but also make virtual savings for the ISKIERKA Foundation. The organiser of the action is Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska S.A. (SAM S.A.)

Another stage of the campaign "THE JOY OF SAVING" that was launched a week ago will take place at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry of the University of Silesia (24 October) in the Cracow University of Economics (25 October), AGH University of Science and Technology (28 October) and Silesian University of Technology in the Faculty of Transport (29 October). A model of a car will be put up in the universities and with the use of augmented reality students will be presented the results of a test of economical driving made by the operator of the A4 Katowice-Krakow motorway.

In the first days of the campaign over a thousand people actively joined in. Internet users who took part in the competition organised on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/A4KatowiceKrakow already saved over 12 thousand zlotys for the beneficiaries of the ISKIERKA Foundation. The competitors not only make savings for the foundation but every day can also win one of seven prizes. The competition lasts until 29 October.

- Students widely use cars nowadays, and they are among drivers who are the most active on the Internet. We hope that they will join in the game of saving on Facebook, which will be profitable for them and at the same time for the beneficiaries of the ISKIERKA Foundation - says Rafał Czechowski, the spokesperson for Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska S.A.

The campaign has been based on the results of the test of economical driving made by the operator of the A4 Katowice-Krakow. They show how selected factors influence fuel consumption. Taking some of them into consideration drivers may limit fuel consumption even by half.

SAM S.A checked how driving style, car accessories or the way of using on-board devices
may influence fuel consumption. In order to this a test of economical driving was made on the A4 Katowice-Krakow using two identical cars – VOLVO V40. As part of the test several trips were made on the concession stretch of the A4 and each time a different factor was checked, e.g. lower pressure in tyres or dynamic driving. Drivers of both cars set off at the same time. One of them closely followed the principles of economic driving and the other was absolutely careless in this respect. Such a test, carried out in natural conditions on a motorway has been made for the first time in Poland. Test report is available at: http://youtu.be/P_p_JBC1CXo

SAM S.A. would like to invite you to participate in the action at: http://youtu.be/40HOx3ifpfoand http://youtu.be/ykKisjj8tYY.

Results of the test of economical driving:*
pressure in tyres that is 20% lower than required may lead to a nearly 19% increase in fuel consumption
driving on neutral gear may lead to 11% higher fuel consumption
driving with a full boot may increase consumption by 1.5%
dynamic driving may lead to even 47% higher fuel consumption
engine braking may lower fuel consumption by nearly 10%
open windows may increase consumption by almost 20%
using cruise control may save about 9% of fuel
driving with the maximum speed allowed on a motorway may use 57% more fuel than driving at around 100 km/h
air conditioning set on a minimum temperature may increase consumption by almost 12%
*results of economical driving test carried out by SAM S.A. on the A4 Katowice-Krakow are  estimates.

About SAM S.A.
Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska S.A. manages a 60-kilometre long stretch of the A4 motorway between Katowice and Krakow. It is the first fully functional road of this kind in Poland, built within the framework of public-private partnership as a brownfield investment – modernisation of the road built in the 1970s and 1980s. Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska S.A. has held the concession for its adaptation to the requirements of a toll motorway and operation since 1997. This required numerous investments. All investment projects, including current maintenance of the road, are financed from tolls for using the concession stretch and from loans obtained from an international bank consortium. Unlike other concessions for managing toll motorways, the project run by Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska S.A. does not burden the state budget in any way. The company does not benefit from any State Treasury subsidies or guarantees.
