The concessionaire of the A4 Katowice-Kraków motorway has applied to the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) for permission to change toll rates for all vehicle categories from 3 April

31 01 2023 #Press information

In a letter submitted today to the General Director for National Roads and Motorways, the concessionaire of the A4 Katowice-Kraków motorway requests a change in toll rates for all vehicle categories from 3 April this year. Passenger car drivers who use automatic payment will be granted a 13% discount.

Passenger car drivers will pay less for travelling the A4 Katowice-Kraków motorway if they pay the tolls using either a videotolling (automatic number plate reading) application or the A4Go electronic toll collection system. Automatic payments are also more efficient, mainly as a result of separate fast lanes, the number of which increased in the last year to three out of ten available in each travel direction. Passenger car drivers have been enjoying a discount on the tolls for more than three years by switching from cash or card to automatic payments. Interest in automatic payment methods is steadily growing - the operator of the concession section of the A4 motorway has already issued nearly 52,000 A4Go electronic toll collection devices and reported more than 1.6 million registered videotolling users. The share of automatic payments in overall toll transactions is already almost 44%.

Proposed new toll rates

In an application submitted to the General Director for National Roads and Motorways, SAM S.A. seeks permission to change toll rates from 3 April this year:

  • for category 1 (vehicles other than motorbikes) - by PLN 2, from PLN 13 to PLN 15;
  • for categories 2, 3, 4 and 5 - by PLN 6, from PLN 40 to PLN 46.

The above rates will apply at each of the two Toll Plazas - in Mysłowice and Balice.

The amount of the discount for category 2 and 3 vehicles, which will apply to these categories from 3 April this year, will be consulted separately with GDDKiA.

Automatic payments to remain the cheapest choice

The concessionaire plans to maintain a discount for automatic toll transactions (A4Go and Telepass electronic toll collection, as well as videotolling via applications such as Autopay, SkyCash, mPay, IKO and via ORLEN Flota cards) for passenger cars. From 3 April, in accordance with the application submitted to the Director of GDDKiA, the toll rate for these transactions will be PLN 2 cheaper, i.e. PLN 13 at each toll plaza, than the standard toll rate.

"The change in toll rates on the concession section of the A4 motorway, which we apply for to GDDKiA, is a result of the general economic situation, which also affects our operations. At its core lies care for maintaining the road and accompanying infrastructure to an appropriate standard. The decision on the previous change, made on April 2022, did not take into account the particularly high level of inflation recorded for the previous year," comments Rafał Czechowski, the spokesman for SAM SA. "In view of the change in toll rates, the decision to maintain the discount for users of applications and A4Go electronic toll collection who travel by passenger cars is of particular importance," he adds.

Information about SAM SA

Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska S.A. manages the 60-km section of the A4 Katowice-Kraków motorway. This is the first fully operational road of this type in Poland, built as part of the public-private partnership, as a brownfield project  on the basis of the road constructed in the 1970s  and 1980s. Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska S.A. obtained a license for its adaptation to the requirements of the toll motorway and operation in 1997. It required numerous investments. All investment projects and current maintenance of road lanes are funded from revenues obtained from the collection of tolls for the concession section and loans received from the international banking consortium. Unlike other concessions for the management of toll motorways, the project implemented by Stalexport Autostrada S. A. does not burden the State Treasury with any obligations. Moreover, it has not received any grants or guarantees of the Treasury.
