A4 Katowice-Kraków motorway: Change of traffic organisation on the Brzęczkowice junction

12 06 2023 #Press information

On Tuesday 13 June this year, new traffic organisation changes will be introduced at the Brzęczkowice junction in Mysłowice, related to the renovation of the bridge and the junction's pavement. They will affect drivers travelling from Tychy, Bielsko-Biała and Cieszyn towards Kraków.

On Wednesday 7 June this year, the exit from the A4 motorway onto the S1 road was opened for drivers travelling from Katowice towards Tychy, Bielsko-Biała and Cieszyn. On 13 June this year, the exit from the S1 to the A4 motorway will be closed for drivers travelling from Tychy, Bielsko-Biała and Cieszyn towards Kraków. A diversion will be made via the Sosnowiec Jęzor junction and then again the S1 road towards Cieszyn and the Łódź-Kraków slip road of the Brzęczkowice junction.

The exit from the S1 to the A4 motorway is scheduled to open on 31 July this year.

The renovation work on the Brzęczkowice junction is additionally accompanied by the following changes and signs for the new traffic organisation:

  • on the carriageway towards Kraków under the bridge, two narrowed lanes with a speed limit of 60 km/h on a section of approximately 700 m. There is a "STOP" sign on the slip road of the Łódź-Kraków junction (joining traffic from the S1 to the A4). Planned date for removal of the obstruction: October 2023;
  • on the carriageway towards Katowice under the bridge, two narrowed lanes with a speed limit of 60 km/h on a section of approximately 700 m. There is a "STOP" sign on the slip road of the Cieszyn-Katowice junction (joining traffic from the S1 to the A4). Planned date for removal of the obstruction: October 2023;
  • on the S1 road, on both carriageways (towards Łódź and towards Cieszyn) in the area of the bridge over the A4 motorway, two narrowed lanes with a speed limit of 60 km/h on a section of approximately 1800 m. Planned date for removal of the obstruction: November 2023;

Due to the renovation work being carried out at the Brzęczkowice junction, drivers travelling on the S1 expressway from Cieszyn or from Łódź towards Katowice, as well as on the A4 motorway from Wrocław towards Łódź or Cieszyn, are advised to use National Road No. 86.

Adequate maintenance of the motorway infrastructure (including pavement and engineering structures) is a result of the current legislation and is a requirement of the Concession Agreement and the consequent need to hand over the A4 motorway to the public in a good condition in 2027. The aim of the repairs is to increase the safety of junction users by ensuring the proper condition of the carriageway surface along the S1 road - improving its evenness, load-bearing capacity and anti-slip properties; repairing defects in surface drainage elements - drainage ditches and culverts; and replacing guard rails. The bridge's functional qualities and aesthetics will be improved and its useful life extended.

All work on the Brzęczkowice junction is scheduled for completion in November 2023.

Detailed information on the dates and locations of the traffic organisation changes are published on the website: www.ia4.pl, on twitter.com/A4KatKra and at Road Information Points.

Information about SAM SA

Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska S.A. manages the 60-km section of the A4 Katowice-Kraków motorway. This is the first fully operational road of this type in Poland, built as part of the public-private partnership, as a brownfield project  on the basis of the road constructed in the 1970s  and 1980s. Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska S.A. obtained a license for its adaptation to the requirements of the toll motorway and operation in 1997. It required numerous investments. All investment projects and current maintenance of road lanes are funded from revenues obtained from the collection of tolls for the concession section and loans received from the international banking consortium. Unlike other concessions for the management of toll motorways, the project implemented by Stalexport Autostrada S. A. does not burden the State Treasury with any obligations. Moreover, it has not received any grants or guarantees of the Treasury.
