Replacement of the road surface on the A4 Katowice-Kraków motorway begins

5 09 2023 #Press information

Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska is starting to replace the surface of the concession section of the A4 motorway. From Tuesday, 5 September to Monday, 11 September, during the night hours (from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.), there will be narrowing to one lane between the Jeleń junction in Jaworzno and the Balin junction in Chrzanów due to the introduction of the changed traffic management. The surface replacement will be carried out in a reliable and driver-friendly manner, affecting short sections at a time, with two lanes available in each direction.

The main motorway resurfacing works will commence on 11 September in the approximately 7-kilometre section between the above-mentioned Jeleń and Balin junctions (from km 362.2 to km 368.9). The contractor will start by replacing the surface on the carriageway towards Kraków and then move on to the carriageway towards Katowice on the same section. In phase 1,
on the carriageway towards Kraków, one lane will be repaired, the other will be passable. The carriageway towards Katowice will include two lanes towards Katowice and one lane towards Kraków. Both carriageways on this section of the A4 will be renovated by the end of 2023.

The works will include resurfacing both motorway carriageways, from the Murckowska junction in Katowice to the Balice junction (between the 340 and 401 km marks). The entire work is divided into 16 sections. In parallel with the surface repairs, 45 viaducts will be repaired.

The proper maintenance of the infrastructure of the A4 Katowice-Kraków motorway section, including the road surface and engineering structures, including bridges and viaducts, results from the regulations in force, but also from the provisions of the Concession Agreement. According to them, we are obliged to hand over the motorway to the public in 2027 in perfect technical condition, not requiring any renovations and modernisation for the following years, reminds Rafał Czechowski, spokesman of Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska. During the replacement of the surface, we will keep two lanes in each direction on each renovated section. Such traffic management has worked very well during previous road renovations, and we assume that it will also minimise inconvenience to travellers on this occasion, he adds.

Also in the case of the renovation of the viaducts, the works will be carried out with two lanes maintained in both directions, despite the exclusion of entire sections of carriageway in the case of some structures. This will be possible thanks to the advance construction of crossings to the other carriageway via the central reserve.

Apart from replacing the surface and restoring its load-bearing capacity at the required sections, the works will also include replacing guard rails in selected areas, repairing drainage systems and restoring horizontal markings.

Replacing the motorway's surface will increase its durability and load-bearing capacity and improve its anti-skid properties, thereby improving motorist safety. Surface drainage will also be improved.

Bridge refurbishment will include repairs to the superstructure, expansion joints, bridge bearings, cornices and pavements, concrete safety barriers and corrosion protection. Not only will this improve the safety and comfort of using the bridges, but also their aesthetics.

Resurfacing and bridge refurbishment works will last until late 2026, excluding winter. The contractor for the works is PAVIMENTAL Polska Sp. z o. o. based in Trzebinia. The contract's net value is over PLN 422 million.

Information about SAM SA

Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska S.A. manages the 60-km section of the A4 Katowice-Kraków motorway. This is the first fully operational road of this type in Poland, built as part of the public-private partnership, as a brownfield project  on the basis of the road constructed in the 1970s  and 1980s. Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska S.A. obtained a license for its adaptation to the requirements of the toll motorway and operation in 1997. It required numerous investments. All investment projects and current maintenance of road lanes are funded from revenues obtained from the collection of tolls for the concession section and loans received from the international banking consortium. Unlike other concessions for the management of toll motorways, the project implemented by Stalexport Autostrada S. A. does not burden the State Treasury with any obligations. Moreover, it has not received any grants or guarantees of the Treasury.
